1. It has to have two POC in it.

2. Who talk to each other.

3. About something other than a white person.

No Joss Whedon show passes, neither does Supernatural, or Being Human.

Veronica Mars passes, but doesn’t pass the original Bechdel Test.

Check out a few more here.

Neither does True Blood Lafayette and Tara.

lol i wrote the Riley test mad long agooooo

2012 and I think we’d do better to list what shows do pass, simply because it would be such a ridiculously short list. Which is not just sad, it’s horrifying.

Thinking of some of my favorite shows…

The article says no Star Trek passes, but Deep Space Nine does handily!  Captian Sisko, Jake Sisko, Cassidy Yeats, Dr. Bashir, and Mr. Worf all have complex relationships that don’t (always) center on white people.  Of course it helps that the main character is a black dude.  (Tries to think of a show recently where the main character is black…)

Lost passes!  Michael, Jin, Sayyid, Sun, and Hurley, Mr. Eko, Analucia, and Rose all talk to each other about all kinds of stuff.

Community passes!  Troy and Abed talk about stuff other than the white people, as do Shirley and Chang.

Twin Peaks does not pass.

X-Files does not pass.

Walking Dead does not pass.

Breaking Bad passes!  But I’m not sure if it still will without Gus on the show.  I love this show, and it’s filmed in my home town, but it really seems like they have to bus in all the white people from elsewhere to be on this show, because there’s not that many here!

Fringe passes!  (I’ve only seen the first season so far!  Please don’t spoil me!) I mean, Philip Broyles and Charlie Frances talk about stuff, and the actor who plays Charlie is mixed Puerto Rican/Asian.  But as much as I’m liking this show so far, I really, really hate how they treat the character Astrid. Fringe definitely has race issues.  At least as much of it as I have seen so far.

Avatar: The Last Airbender does and doesn’t, depending on what you mean.  If you’re talking about portrayals on screen, then yes, it’s a world without white people.  And that’s important!  But if you’re talking about POC actors having opportunities to work, which is just as important, it doesn’t.

Hmm.  Writing this it occurs to me that most of the current, not-old-show-streaming-on-the-internet tv I watch is NFL football.  Which, incidentally, also passes!

You know what really scares me though? Is I can think of more shows from my childhood (70s and 80s) that would have passed than shows that I currently watch. We have actually regressed. And I don’t mean that there ever was A LOT of such shows, a fair amount, no not at all. But better than now! And I wasn’t even allowed to watch much TV as a kid/teen. But I’m thinking of Different Strokes, Miami Vice, Amen, The Jeffersons, the obvious stuff like Cosby… sheesh…
