Qinhara Nalinay: trans* identities and kyriarchy

leonineantiheroine:

qinhara:

also, yeah, i was angry at you and other people for being so oppressive about transabled and transethnic identities. i am angry at a lot of people, at the general ~consensus~ as it seems to be, to have this instant reaction of oppressive revulsion and anger. i don’t think it’s right that this is…

I’m not racially or culturally privileged as a Black woman/person of Afro-Mauritian descent compared to an overwhelming majority of transethnic people though and neither are Black folks and other POC all over the world.  I mean that’s where the comparison comes down to right? And the same probably applies for disabled folks compared to transabled folks and fat people compared to transfat folks.

For white transethnic people who feel they are Black inside, I wonder how they conceive of Blackness—probably in a really fetishistic and reductive way. And yeah as many people have already argued, trans folks are being shafted all the way home here with the word trans being employed by transfat, transethnic and transabled people so nefariously and in an umbrella way.

Someone yesterday reblogged a brilliant dissection of transabled. The most important parts being that it is intentionally appropriative of Trans* identity and that it is not an overlap (or at least not construed as an overlap) with BIID, which does have many similar features. So as to that, I’d suggest looking at that. Frankly, I buy what was written, I think there is a substantive difference between the two, and I really question transabledness.

As for transethnicity…y’know what, no.

no, I don’t buy this shit. As someone who is trans*, Black, and fat, y’all don’t get to just up and claim you ~feel~ fat or Black. Shit, you don’t get to claim you ~feel~ another race. It’s not a thing that can happen that you can just put on. Like the above poster I’m hard pressed to see anyone who doesn’t have some reductive reasoning at work. And that’s being charitable.

That’s not even getting into how people think they have a right to co-opt others’ pain and experiences.

Look, if someone wants to say they feel solidarity with or compassion toward, or something else, fine. Whatever. Just walk the talk.

But anything that doesn’t articulate a reasonable understanding of limitations between ~conceptual~ things likes “transethnic” or whatever, and actually having to live under systemic oppressions can bite me. It can bite me after three days with no showers.
